How to choose your pillow ?

Comment choisir son oreiller ?

What a choice, our good old pillow is just as important as the quality of our bedding.

If every morning you have the strange sensation of not having slept well or not being rested, and on top of that you have a sore neck, it may be time to change your pillow.

However, if it is possible, depending on where you buy it, do not hesitate and test your pillow. You have to test the goods!
Try to find a place where you can lie down and make sure your new nighttime friend is holding your head correctly. Your head is only supposed to sink a third of the way down to restore the gap between the mattress and your natural head height. If this pillow already meets this first criterion, it's a good start.

The choice of a pillow as well as the mattress is very personal, we all have our preferences. However, certain models are recommended depending on the positions adopted during the night.

What position do you sleep in?

Do you sleep on your back?

In this case, it is advisable to sleep with a pillow that is firm enough to guarantee good support for the neck. Be careful if your pillow is too hard, it can cause migraines.
Don't forget that even if you choose a firm pillow your head is still supposed to sink by a third.
If you suffer from neck pain, a memory foam pillow may be more suitable for you.
Be sure to choose natural materials, as they are thermo-regulating and make us sweat much less, for our greater comfort.

Do you sleep on your side?

In this case, you can choose a softer pillow, it should not completely cover the head, and yes, you still need to breathe.

Do you sleep on your stomach?

Well, good for you, you don't need a pillow.
In this position, your vertebrae remain aligned and you also avoid the muscles of swallowing and the trachea to be under tension.
And if you really can't do without it, choose a soft down pillow, for example, and a rather flat one between five and six cm thick.

Which material to choose?

Natural we tell you at Bergamott Cottage!

Wool is the only material on which we do not sweat, it is so breathable that it adapts to the temperature of all our little sleepers. And it can be easily shaped.
Feathers and down offer maximum comfort. The more feathers you have, the more comfortable you will be.
The memory foam hugs the back of the sleeper's neck and maintains it in order to avoid any pain in the cervical vertebrae; it is a so-called ergonomic pillow. The foam being synthetic, you risk sweating more, and the memory foam models are less suitable for people who are restless during their sleep.
Finally, the synthetic pillow has the advantage of being easier to clean and dry.

Just like bedding, a pillow does not live forever. It should be replaced every three to five years. A sagging pillow no longer provides any support for your head.
In order to prolong its life expectancy, do not hesitate to tap it every morning so that it regains its shape.

A little information, there is a difference between a sleeping pillow and a resting pillow, and it is important to know the difference.
For sleeping, the rectangular shape remains the most appropriate, this shape will properly maintain your head at the same height as your spine.
A square shape is recommended to maintain your head but also your upper body, for example when sitting. This shape is therefore adopted during your moments of relaxation.

Now you know all the little secrets of pillows.
